It's back, and will be here for at least a week likely longer.
The dreaded polar vortex has returned and will be a major influence on our weather into early February.
Environment Canada sever weather preparedness meteorologist Marie-Eve Giguere says temperatures will remain bitterly cold for at least a week.
She says the system that caused bone chilling conditions a few years back is with us again.
"It's coming from the north, it's our famous polar vortex that always wiggles over the North Pole in the winter and sometimes it just decides to dig further south towards our region"
She says December and early January were above seasonal, but that's behind us.
"The average was slightly warmer than normal but now definitely we're seeing a change in the situation and this cold air is just going to sit over us for the next few days, even few weeks"
She says seasonal average daytime highs are just below freezing.
"Into early February we're looking at daytime highs closer to minus-10, so that's what we normally get overnight and then we get even colder than that. Add to this the wind it feels like it's even colder. We're looking at windchill around minus-20 in the next few days"
Giguere reminds people these temperatures can be dangerous, so bundle up and make sure children are wearing appropriate clothing.
She says the weekend will be chilly, followed by a significant snowfall Monday and then into the deep freeze for several days.
