More medium density homes are one step closer to reality in Tecumseh.
The town voted to rezone a plot of land near County Road 42 and Lesperance Road from commercial to residential at a special meeting of council Tuesday night. Rezoning the 1.63 acre chunk of land paves the way for four six-unit residential buildings, for a total of 24 individual living spaces.
With the majority of town populated with single family homes, Mayor Gary McNamara says the development is part of the town's future.
"It's a market that we didn't have a lot of in our community and it now seems to be in demand and that's going create a lot of opportunity," he says.
He tells AM800 News smaller homes will be appealing to residents looking to downsize.
"Many want to basically sell their big homes and downsize," says McNamara. "Some of them, they just want to pocket their dollars and rent."
McNamara says the development will also help bring in new residents.
"The big one is basically entry level folks who want to live in the community, but it's very difficult for them because the price of homes is quite high," he says. "So this creates a more diverse market that's more inclusive."
He says a final draft plan is the next step that will have to come before council.
