The Town of Tecumseh has set up a task force to deal with flooding in the event of an emergency.
Manager of Engineering Services John Henderson says the Emergency Control Group consists of representatives from the Essex Region Conservation Authority, Essex Power, Enbridge along with the the province's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the OPP, Tecumseh Fire and town staff.
He says the group hopes to develop and implement action plans for flooding.
"The group is basically being set up to try and be proactive and be ready in case a flooding event does occur," says Henderson. "The water levels that we're experiencing right now are extremely high, right now we're probably close to four inches above the all time highs for Lake St. Clair."
In the event of a flooding emergency, Henderson says it's important to have all stakeholders on the same page.
"It's very concerning for the town right now because there are many breakwalls along our shoreline where the lake levels are at the very close to the top of the breakwalls," says Henderson. "So any increase lake levels or events caused by wind and every topping of waves as a result has the potential to cause flooding within the Town of Tecumseh."
Henderson says the group will meet for the first time July 25th and will provide regular updates to the community.
"The idea is to get everybody around the table and basically discuss what issues we could for see during a flood event and try and give information out to the public to how they can best prepare for some of these things as well with information provided by some of these agencies," says Henderson.
He is also reminding residents, sandbags are still available for those living along the Lake St. Clair and Pike Creek shorelines. The bags can be picked up at town hall.
Sand is also available for bagging at Lakewood Park.
