Tecumseh Ward 2 Councillor Bill Altenhof wants to see more "covert" methods used to track speeding in the town.
Currently, speed monitoring devices are used to track speeders in trouble areas but these devices show drivers they're being watched — working as a deterrent and skewing the data.
Altenhof asked council to look at tracking unsafe drivers more discretely to get a better idea of what's really going on after receiving a slew of complaints from residents on Riverside Dr. between Manning and Brighton Rd.
He tells AM800 News excessive speeding, passing unsafely, and reckless driving have been reported, not just in his ward, but throughout the town.
"Over the span of my tenure as councillor there's been a number of complaints, I'll just say throughout Ward 2, where you get little discussions here and there and boy it can go on and on with the various streets," he says.
By hiding the monitoring system, Altenhof hopes the town will get a real indication of where to best apply resources to combat reckless driving.
"They're controlling and calming the speeds compared to what's really happening," says Altenholf. "I propose some sort of covert type monitoring system where it's very discreetly monitors the speeds and that will give us a good idea of what's going on."
He says visible monitoring devices are a temporary fix.
"They slow down because they see the blinking lights and they acknowledge they're doing something they shouldn't be doing. Unfortunately, take it away and things go back," he says.
Administration will examine the possibility of using discrete speed monitoring and bring the information forward at a future council meeting.
