The town of Tecumseh decided to post more signage in response to people parking on a pathway snaking along Pentilly Rd.
Vehicles have been parking on the boulevard and even on the path itself, drawing complaints from residents.
Councillor Bill Altenhof says parking on walkways is never legal, but the signs will be a friendly reminder of that.
"There's a minor cost here, we're talking hundreds of dollars, and I see it as nothing more than a kind reminder on what you should be doing anyway and I think a lot of people will see it and recognize it," he says.
Restricting parking to the west side of the road and closer to Beach Grove Golf and Country Club was brought forward.
A representative from the course argued parking vehicles that close to the fairways would result in more liability and would force the club to erect a fence.
Several residents stood before council at a special meeting Tuesday night — most expressed the need for enforcement and proper signage.
In the end council did agree to post signs and ramp up enforcement, scrapping the idea of allowing parking on the west side of the street.
Altenhof says new signs are a fair compromise to pushing parking to the boarder of the golf course.
Issues of liability for the town were also raised at the meeting, and Altenhof says the signs will also make it clear to anyone who may think paths are an extension of the roadway.
"The alternative of not doing it could potentially put the town into a situation where the liability would not be hundreds of dollars, but potentially millions of dollars," He says. "By taking this proactive approach, to broadcast it to the drivers to stay off the sidewalk, I think it's a low cost solution to alleviate future issues."
By-law enforcement is primarily complaint driven.
Altenhof told AM800 News the issue is an example of council working with residents to bring about change.
"When residents bring it forth to their councillor, it's my job to bring it forth the administration to city council," he says. "I think we did that, I think we came to a very fair and balanced solution, but in general I'm a stronger advocate for enforcement across all of Tecumseh."
The new no parking signs will be placed on existing light posts on Pentilly Rd.
