The Town of Tecumseh is looking to open one of its ice pads at Tecumseh Arena.
Council is being asked at Tuesday’s meeting to approve the re-installation of the ice for Rink B and Deputy Mayor Joe Bachetti says if approved, the ice will be available starting on August 10.
"Our parks director has done a great job with his staff there,' says Bachetti. "You know, there's obviously municipalities across Ontario that are working together with Ontario Parks/Rec and Ontario Recreation Facility Association in conjunction with our health unit and provincial document."
Bachetti says the town has worked with different agencies including the local health unit on its reopening plan.
"We have to put a plan in place that would allow us to reopen these facilities," he says. "The goal is to ensure that within each step of the reopening, it is safe to do so, not only for staff but for the public and that's why this must not been seen as a race to first but whether plan to be right."
Bachetti says the town has heard from users and council is doing its best to respond to the needs of the community.
"Safety of staff and public is paramount but the continuation of the delivery of those essential public services that the community has expected and there's a need,” he says. “We're responding to the needs of the community as the pandemic evolves."
The report also provides another option where no ice is available in August but have both rinks operating in September.
It also breaks down a number of safety measures that will be in place at the arena.
According to the report, employees and guests will be advised to practice physical distancing by standing at least six feet away from other people throughout the facility or an extended stick length away while on the ice, as much as possible.
