A councillor in Tecumseh wants Canada Post to work with the municipality when installing community mailboxes.
Andrew Dowie feels it's important the town is aware, where the postal service is putting the mailboxes before they're installed.
He says a collaborative approach will benefit both parties and the entire community.
"What I'd like to do through this motion is let Canada Post know that we really could benefit from a collaborative approach when it comes to siting mailboxes, in the need that they do have to be relocated for a variety of reasons and that the town is a willing partner to help put these boxes in the right spot," says Dowie.
Dowie feels the town and Canada Post need to work together.
"We believe that by collaborating on the locations when they are changing them," says Dowie. "Obviously this is the part of my motion by collaborating with Canada Post on the locations, we can find some better locations whether than just have them show up and be installed based on a process that's unique to Canada Post."
Dowie tells AM800 News safety needs to be a top priority.
"Safety for the employees, safety for the people who have to walk to the mailbox, now what we're seeing because of some locations, people are driving to the mailbox because they don't feel it's a safe walk to get there," says Dowie. "The town has installed a couple sidewalks to try and assit residents to get to their mailboxes safely."
Dowie says in some cases community mailboxes have been installed on the opposite side of the sidewalk.
He says the placement of the community mailboxes has been an ongoing issue in the town for a number of years.
Dowie will present his notice of motion at Tuesday night's council meeting.
