Talks to try to end the 13 day old strike at Caesars Windsor came to an abrupt halt at about noon Wednesday.
The two sides had returned to the bargaining table today with a provincial conciliator.
The Unifor Local 444 bargaining team presented its revised proposal, the Caesars negotiators reviewed it for a couple of hours and came back with a flat no.
He says the casino did not make any counter offer, simply rejected the union's proposal.
"The casino took a couple of hours to digest and go through it and when they came back they clearly said they have no intention of meeting or coming to terms with any of the demands we put forward at this point they're not moving forward"
Stewart says the membership on the picket line is only getting stronger.
He says the union remains open to bargaining.
Unifor Local 444 President James Stewart announces talks with Caesars Windsor failed, Holiday Inn, April 18, 2018 (by AM800's Peter Langille)
"We are open you need to go back, we believe you need to go back and you need to look at this and get back to us and we're available. That's what we said, we're available to talk we want to talk we want to resolve it," explains Stewart. "They said they have no interest in that package at all."
Stewart says Caesars needs to move on its position for there to be a resolution.
He suggests there may not have been a serious attempt to negotiate from the casino side, pointing out the reason for the delay to today was to have the same provincial conciliator. Turns out, it was a different conciliator at the table.
Stewart would not speculate on how long he expects to have his 2300 members on the picket line.
No new talks are scheduled.
Caesars issued a simple statement: Caesars Windsor remains disappointed that a tentative agreement, which was endorsed by the Union Bargaining Committee, was not ratified. Today the groups met to discuss the issues but we were unable to reach a framework for an agreement. Unfortunately, the labour disruption continues and we remain closed.
