The results of a survey of Windsor residents on whether to opt-in or opt-out of marijuana storefronts has found the majority of people want to opt in.
The survey was done by the city to get some input on the topic before Windsor city councillors decide on January 21st.
The survey received 7,941 responses but 5,411 of them were from the Windsor-Essex area.
Of those local responses, 81% were in favour of recreational cannabis storefronts.
Comments from those who want to opt in indicate people are worried about promoting illicit sales if no storefronts are allowed, as well as diversifying the economy.
People who want to opt out generally feel marijuana should not be legal and want to take a 'wait and see' approach.
Although both groups voiced concerns about the location of the stores around certain sensitive areas.
Recreational cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17, 2018.
On April 1, 2019, the province will allow licensed private sector retailers to sell recreational cannabis from storefronts. Up to this point, purchases have to be on-line.
