'It could have easily happened to us' was the feeling expressed by students in Windsor-Essex taking part in the #JerseysForHumboldt' nation-wide campaign.
Many students were seen wearing hockey jerseys in schools on Thursday, but it wasn't to cheer on a local hockey team.
They wanted to do something for the community in Saskatchewan that is still coming to grips with a horrific bus crash last Friday that claimed the lives of 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.
"Me putting on this jersey doesn't directly do anything for them," says Gr. 12 student Steven Nesbitt at Holy Names High School. "But it kinda shows that we are all here and as soon as the families over there in Humboldt see that everyone in Canada or a lot of kids in high schools are doing this, it shows that we support them, we are here for them and they are in our prayers."
Nesbitt says the outpouring of support across the country proves what Canadians are at heart.
"I was actually at a hockey tournament when I heard about it," says Gr. 12 student Julia Barei at Holy Names High School. "So my team, it hit us pretty hard so because we were driving and we were up in Toronto so we were driving pretty far and we know it could have happened to any of us so it hit us pretty hard."
Barei also brought additional jerseys to school in case any student wanted to take part in the cause.
