St George's Church and Hall in Walkerville will be demolished.
Council has voted in favour of demolition and the the land will be split into three equal properties that will be re-zoned residential.
Paula Rankin lives across the street from St Georges and three of her children are visually impaired.
She says finding the right neighbourhood was very important to her family and council's decision was the right one.
"We love our neighbourhood, we want to share the neighbourhood so by having three other homes there, three other families have the opportunity to move into Walkerville and enjoy what we have," says Rankin.
Rankin adds that "the current state of the building made this decision a no-brainer." She says "the engineering report said it wasn't feasible then I don't even know why it took this long to get to this point, to tell you the truth."
The Diocese of Huron has been lobbying for demolition for over a year but first agreed to seek out other uses for the building through its sale, which were unsuccessful.
The Dioceses will be responsible for the cost of demolition and clean up of the site as well as the sale of the land.
An engineering report outlined that it would cost about $1.3-million to restore the building.
