The effort to save snakes in the Spring Garden Natural Area is part of the clean up after the massive Herb Gray Parkway project.
A restoration project is underway to protect Butler's Gatersnakes, considered a "species at risk".
Director of Conservation Services Kevin Money says the project, expected to wrap up in early April, carries a pricetag of about $150,000. "What we'll be doing is removing some invasive shrubs to open it open it up, create more prairie-like habitat for them, which is what they need for all their life cycle purposes."
Money says Spring Garden is considered a prairie habitat which is rare in our region.
The restoration project covers more than 300 acres.
