After a strong start to the season that saw three rookies shine in an overtime win at home against the Guelph Storm Windsor ran out of gas against the London Knights at Budweiser Gardens Friday night.
Windsor got on the board first with a marker from Daniel D'Amico just four minutes into the first period but London answered quickly on a goal from Connor McMichael just 30-seconds later. The Spitfires had a chance to pull in front mid-way through the first but Jordan Kooy turned away Windsor's Will Cuylie on a penalty shot.
Both teams traded goals again in the second with Tyler Angle beating Kooy to pull ahead to start the frame, but McMichael answered again to tie things up at 2-2 with his second of the game.
The third period belonged to the Knights with three unanswered-goals from Matvey Guskov, Billy Moskal, and an empty netter from Cole Tymkin to pull away to a 5-2 final and give the Knights a 1-0 lead in the season series for two teams with a deep-seated rivalry.
Michael DiPeitro stopped 33 of the 37 shots he faced in his first game back with the Spitfires since being returned to the team by theĀ NHL's Vancouver Canucks Thursday.
Windsor will host the Saginaw Spirit at the WFCU Centre Thursday night at 7:05pm.
