A big third period saw the Windsor Spitfires score four unanswered goals to top the visiting London Knights at the WFCU Centre on Tuesday night.
Hayden McCool scored the game winner as he tipped in a blast from Jalen Chatfield on a power play. Chatfield finished with a goal and an assist.
Logan Stanley, Cole Purboo and Gabriel Vilardi were the other goal scorers for the Spits. Logan Brown added two assists — that's seven through a four-game point streak.
McCool says a win over the rival Knights is a big boost for team confidence.
"To get a win like that, that's huge for our momentum and even our confidence, to know that we can come in a beat London and we're not scared of them. We're probably going to see them a lot throughout the year, so it's a good little building point," says McCool
Head coach Rocky Thompson says goaltender Mike DiPietro did a great job of keeping the Spits in the game, especially with the penalty kill being leaned on at times.
"I think our penalty kill did an outstanding job and usually your best penalty killer is your goaltender and Mikey was great when he needed to be," says Thompson. "Our guys did a great job on the kill. It's extremely taxing and it's tough and we kind of have a thin bench, but they were able to perservere."
Michael DiPietro made 28 saves in the win.
Spits defenceman Logan Stanley says the mindset heading into the third period was to keep at it.
"I think we knew we were playing pretty good. We had to stay disciplined, they [referees] were calling it pretty tight tonight. I think we knew we were going to score, we knew we were going to get a couple of power plays and it just worked out in the third," says Stanley.
The Spitfires head back out on the road with a two-game trip beginning in Guelph on Friday and Owen Sound on Saturday.
