The Windsor Spitfires remain undefeated after a 2-1 win over the Erie Otters in OHL action at the WFCU Centre Thursday night.
Erie struck first on Hayden Fowler's third goal of the season to make it 1-0 with just over two-minutes left in the opening period.
Windsor forward Tyler Angle tells AM800 News Spitfire goalie Kari Piiroinen and Erie goaltender Daniel Murphy were on top of their game in the second period.
"Going down 1-0 when we were up the whole game in shots when we were getting our shots? Their goalie had a really good game, but I don't think we doubted ourselves throughout the whole game, we didn't doubt ourselves and stayed positive in the room," says Angle.
Windsor finally got to Murphy three-minutes into the second period on Luke Boka's second goal of the young season to tie things up 1-1.
But with Thomas Stevenson and Angle in the box midway through the third period, Windsor had to fight off a tough Erie powerplay.
Angle would atone for his mistake, netting his third of the year and the game winner to make it 2-1 with just five minutes remaining in game.
"After that big five on three penalty kill I think it kind of boosted everyone's confidence up and got us going, that's when we got that goal with five minutes left in the third and we just bared down from there," he added.
Head Coach Trevor Letowski calls keeping Erie off the board with a two man advantage in the third is the turning point of the game.
"That was a tough penalty to take with Angle, that's a huge moment because if they score there it's probably a different story for sure," he says.
Piiroinen stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced for his second straight win — Windsor's is now 2-0 on the season.
The Spitfires are back at it Friday as they face the Hamilton Bulldogs at the First Ontario Centre at 7pm.
Tune into AM800 for all the action.
