The Windsor Spitfires put in a valiant effort on First Responders Day but came up short in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Kingston Frontenacs in OHL action at the WFCU Centre Sunday.
Windsor got out to a quick start in their quest to snap a four-game losing skid after Connor Corcoran stepped into a pass from Tyler Angle to make it 1-0 just two-minutes into the first period.
The Spitfires held on to the lead until the dying minutes of the first frame when Matt Hotchkiss banked a rebound in off the leg of Windsor goaltender Colton Incze to send both teams to the dressing room tied 1-1.
Hotchkiss would turn a Windsor turnover into a 2-1 lead midway through the second period before Ian Martin snapped one past Incze from the half boards to pull Kingston out to a 3-1 lead.
The Spitfires almost pulled within a goal heading into the third period but a Chase Campbell goal was overturned in the final minutes after Angle took a holding penalty behind the play.
Windsor found another gear in the third period led Curtis Douglas and Captain Luke Boka. A hard forecheck led to a nifty feed to a wide open Boka in front of the net who made no mistake, burying his 10th of the year past Frontenac netminder Marshall Frappier.
Douglas crashed the net on a late power play to tuck a rebound past Frappier for his 25th of the year to tie things up 3-3 and send the game into overtime.
Angle was sent to the box again on a hooking call just 30-seconds into the extra frame and Kingston took advantage just moments later.
Billy Constantinou deposited his ninth of the year behind a scrambling Incze for a 4-3 overtime win — handing the Spitfires their fifth straight loss.
Sarnia tightened its hold on seventh place in the OHL Western Conference with a 6-5 win over the Niagara Ice Dogs Sunday.
Windsor still holds a two point edge over the Erie Otters for the eighth and final playoff spot in the west.
The Spitfires will host the Owen Sound Attack at the WFCU Centre Thursday night — puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
