While Ford members in Windsor were able to avoid going on strike just weeks ago, one of the local plants may be laid off due to strikes in the United States.
President of Unifor Local 200, John D'Agnolo, says while there is a tentative agreement now in place for United Auto Workers in the U.S., if the agreement is not ratified by members, workers at Windsor's Annex Engine Plant will be laid off.
The Annex Engine Plant produces the 6.8-litre and 7.3-litre engines for use in the F-Series of pick-up trucks, and makes nearly 900 engines a day by nearly 900 workers.
The plant supplies product to the Kentucky Truck Plant and the Ohio Assembly Plant, however most of the product goes to Kentucky, where workers there have been off the job for just over two weeks.
He says the Essex Engine Plant, which produces the 5.0L V8 engine for the F-150, would not impacted.
According to CNBC, a potential deal was made on Wednesday afternoon, which could signal beginning of the end of the strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers that's been ongoing since September.
The tentative deal with Ford will have to be ratified by UAW members before it becomes official.
D'Agnolo says the Annex Plant members, who build parts for Kentucky Truck Plant, may be affected.
"Right now we've put them in storage, the racks are full, and they've created some engines but they're at the point now where they will not need to build any more. And it looks like, if that's the case and they're still down, we will be down."
He says there may be other things the workers can do aside from building the engines.
"We'll continue to look at different ways of keeping the workforce. I know we have training, health and safety training, we have different types of training for the trades also, and hopefully we can utilize that time to make sure everybody is trained up."
He says Unifor and UAW have been in contact over this time.
"We're going to be supporting those workers at the UAW. We're hoping that they can come to an agreement because they don't want to be out on strike. It's very difficult to live on that kind of money, and I hope they can come to an agreement and start back to work again."
D'Agnolo says it will take a few days for UAW members to vote on the tentative deal, but if the deal is not ratified Windsor members will start being laid off by mid-week.
He says the Essex Engine Plant, which produces the 5.0L V8 engine for the F-150, would not impacted.
Unifor ratified a three year agreement on September 24, avoiding a strike on this side of the border.
