Construction of a massive solar panel farm at the Windsor International Airport is ahead of schedule.
The 100,000 panel project on 300 acres of airport land is now into the testing phase.
PCL is the project constructor and Manager of Renewable Energy Terry Olynyk says the construction portion is essentially complete.
But Olynyk says the testing of that many panels is a complex process. "We are dealing with a utility scale power plant so there's a lot of checks and balances. We have to make sure the system is performing in an optimal fashion and that all the safety elements are in check. This way we can hand over a fully functional product to the client Samsung.
Once hooked up to the grid, the panels will generate up to 50 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 8,500 homes.
It's expected to bring in about $18-million in revenue to the city over a 20 year lease agreement.
