Sobeys is doing its part to go green and eliminate single-use plastics.
Shoppers at Sobeys grocery stores will soon need to bring their own totes or carry their groceries home as the chain moves to phase out plastic bags by February 2020.
The chain, owned by Empire Co., will roll out the initiative at its other banners, including Safeway and Foodland, soon after.
Sobeys says it is making the move to phase out plastic bags as a response to calls from customers and employees to use less plastic.

The retailer is also committing to launch programs to reduce plastic in other areas of the stores.
In August, in the produce aisle, Sobeys will introduce a line of reusable mesh produce bags made from recycled water bottles to provide customers with an alternative for their fresh produce.
IGA stores on Montreal Island will also launch a campaign in September to encourage reusable bag adoption, including designated parking spots for customers who bring reusable bags and promotional offers on reusable bags and boxes to encourage customer use.
