Pedestrian safety in Walkerville will be debated during tonight's Windsor City Council meeting.
Ward 4 Councillor Chris Holt plans to file a notice of motion for council to re-consider a previous decision to reject a signalized pedestrian crosswalk at Wyandotte St. East and Chilver.
Holt says there are petitions circulating calling for the added safety feature in an area that has become popular. He says about 1,000 people have signed the online petition.
"This has really be driven by the businesses along Wyandotte St in the Walkerville area and the residents association," says Holt. Everybody kinda has their own reason for why they want this kind of safe crossing across Wyandotte St."
This is about making Walkerville better, Holt adds. "It sort of stretches beyond safety to me," he says. "It stretches into economic development, these are people who are making a destination of Walkerville and they want to feel safe and secure and to enjoy it."
According to Councillor Holt, it would cost about $69,000 to purchase and install the signalized pedestrian crosswalk. He says Councillors Bill Marra and Rino Bortolin are supporting the cause with their ward funds.
