The deal for Ottawas captain includes five players and three draft picks

The Ottawa Senators have traded captain Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks.

The Senators receive forward Chris Tierney and defenceman Dylan DeMelo along with prospects Rudolfs Balcers and Josh Norris, a conditional second-round pick in 2019 and a conditional first-round selection in 2020.

If the Sharks re-sign Karlsson, Ottawa will get a conditional second-round pick in 2021.

Ottawa is also sending prospect Francis Perron to San Jose in the deal.

Karlsson won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman in 2012 and 2015 and was the runner-up in 2016 and 2017.

Since coming into the league, no defenceman has scored more points than Karlsson with 126 goals and 518 points in 627 games.
