Yesterday was the first day of practice for the upcoming Indianapolis 500 with the 102nd running of the iconic race set for a week from Sunday.
Simon Pagenaud led the way as 34 drivers completed laps on the 2.5-mile super-speedway.
Pagenaud ran a best lap of 225.787 mph while teammate Helio Castroneves was fastest in a three-hour end-of-day session at 224.665 mph.
Scott Dixon was fifth fastest with a speed of 224.353 mph.
Dixon, a former Indy 500 winner, and winner of the Detroit Grand Prix six years ago, told listeners of AM800's the Morning Drive, it was good to get back on the speedway.
"It's the first day back on the speedway since last year for the official practice and gearing up for qualifying for the 102nd Indy 500 in the next two weeks."
Dixon says it's a big change being on the speedway, after running the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the man-made road course last weekend.
"This weekend we should be reaching speeds of almost 240 miles per hour heading into turn one.
The weekend after the Indy 500 the series heads to Belle Isle for the Detroit Grand Prix, June 1-3.
