The shift changes were part of contract negotiations.

Big changes are coming to front-line Windsor police officers in the new year.

As part of the contract approved in March 2016, officers will be adopting 12-hour shifts.

They currently work shifts that consist of 10 hours, 10 hours and then 8 hours.

Beginning in the new year, it will change to two 12-hour shifts.

Chief Al Frederick says the idea came from the Windsor Police Association during contract negotiations.

"It is a huge change for us and with that we had to restructure the organization to accommodate that change," says Chief Frederick.

"We have been working 10-10-8s for 27 years."

Chief Frederick says the Windsor Police Service had to restructure its investigative floor to make sure front-line platoons and patrol officers have enough staff to meet the needs of the community especially during peak times at night on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

He says 12-hour shifts are predominantly used for police officers around the province.

He hopes the changes also improve response times for officers.
