Amherstburg residents and small business owners will have to remove their off-site portable signs.
A bylaw that has been in the works since 2014 finally passed Monday night, prohibiting temporary signs that are not on business property.
The move follows complaints from residents who see them as an eyesore and a distraction for drivers.
Councillor Diane Pouget says she's very happy the bylaw finally passed.
"I think the majority of residence will be very grateful that we finally have this sign bylaw in place."
She says people involved with Communities in Bloom were discouraged by the display in the town.
"They were very, very upset about the sign pollution as they entered and exited the town of Amherstburg," Pouget says. "So our licensing department worked very hard, and they were able to have public meetings and public consultations, and as a result to that the sign bylaw is now in place."
Portable signs are only allowed to be displayed on business property.
Pouget says this is important because they are a beautiful, tourist destination and a national finalist with the Communities in Bloom.
The bylaw goes into effect January 1, 2017
