A group wanting to build a miracle league in east Windsor, has already received about $700,000 in pledges, even before the project gets approval from the city.
The Save the Park Miracle League Committee will approach Windsor City Council on Monday asking council to direct administration to enter into negotiations to lease the former Riverside Arena property.
Administration is recommending the land be sold for residential and commercial development.
Chair of the Save the Park Miracle League Committee Bill Kell says the land should remain recreational.
"This is the heart of the old Riverside area, this was a park and property donated to the town of Riverside many years ago in the 1920s to be a park, it was a hub of activity," he says.
He says the miracle league, which is a specialized field for children with disabilities, is needed in the city.
"We spoke with other organizations such as the Miracle league in Amherstburg, Family Respite Services, the John McGivney Centre, Windsor-Essex Community Services and they all agree there is a need for this."
Kell expects the committee will need to raise $2.4-$3-million for the miracle league.
