The fight to prevent a big box development from going up across from the Ojibway Nature Reserve has taken an economic and emotional toll.
Save Ojibway group member Nancy Pancheshan has been ordered by a judge to pay the Coco Group $4,500.
The money is for legal fees during an Ontario Municipal Board challenge to the project at the corner of Matchette Rd. and Sprucewood Ave. in Windsor.
The construction company had been suing for $700,000.
Pancheshan says the award adds insult to injury. "To put all that work into it and to have to pay $4,500, that may not seem like a lot of money but it is a lot of money. It's kind of, there you go Nancy, that's what you get for trying to protect a globally endangered ecosystem."
"There were many sleepless night but protecting Ojibway was worth it," says Pancheshan. "The more I learned about what Ojibway is, the more I could never walk away. I would always be ashamed of that."
Fellow group member Anna Lynne Meloche has been ordered to pay $6,500.
