A section of the Sandwich St. roundabout construction site is now off limits.
Several artifacts were discovered while digging near the Ambassador Bridge Friday.
Due to the historical significance of Sandwich Town, city engineer Tiffany Pocock says the city employed an archeologist for the project.
Construction continues on the site, which was at one point occupied by several colonial and native groups.
She says the next step is to excavate the area to see what else can be found.
"They have found an area of cultural interest, right now they're working around it and we're entering into stage four of the archeological process," says Pocock.
She told AM800 News a variety of items were found.
"One is a piece of pottery, there's a rock that sort of looks like a drill shape, they think it was used for drilling, and the other ones are little shards of material used in fires and stuff like that," Pocock says.
The area in question will now be dug by hand, according to Pocock.
"Any of the native soil that they see, anything that they know is not native soil, like granular material that can be removed easily, but anything else will be dug by hand," she says.
The area has been covered while the city waits for a crew to arrive for the dig next week.
Pocock added it's a crime to disturb an area deemed to be of cultural significance, violators could face up to $1-million in fines and jail time.
She asks the public to avoid the area.
