The County of Essex is getting on board with a number on municipalities across the province calling for balance when it comes to hydro rates.
Essex Deputy Mayor, Richard Meloche, says there's inequity between the cost of hydro for rural residents versus urban residents due to higher distribution charges.
Meloche says if you're considered rural you're paying more.
"Most urban centres have a collective distribution company and anything in between those urban centres is considered rural and Ontario Hydro is the distributor for electricity in those areas and what we're finding is the rates are much higher."
He says, in Essex County, more than 50% of residents are considered rural.
"In rural areas the hydro bills are significantly higher than they are in urban centres. We need the province to look at these costs and somehow re-distribute the costs so that rural residents aren't unfairly over burdened with hydro rates because of distribution."
The county has joined a wave of municipalities sending letters urging Premier Kathleen Wynne to re-evaluate the delivery structure for hydro and make changes to address unfair billing for rural residents.
