Amherstburg's cenotaph in King's Navy Yard Park is set to get a facelift.
Chris Gibb is with the Amherstburg Marsh Collection Society and says several plaques and story boards are in the works to mark the 100th anniversary of World War I which came to an end November 11, 1918.
Gibb says a 'Walk of Heroes' is being planned as well which will include pictures of local veterans on light posts throughout the town.
He says it's important to tell their story.
"A name on a brass plaque is nice, but where did they work? What did they do before the war? One fellow was killed rescuing a friend in front of the trenches on Vimy Ridge. That's a story that needs to be told."
Gibb says it's going to be an impressive display.
"In this day and age, it's to have a visual medium, something people can go and see and touch. How many families do you see walking around with an ice cream? It makes it real for them and it gives us something to remember rather than just a guy who has a street named after him."
He says he's looking forward to getting the ball rolling.
"We're getting ready to work with the Parks Department to see what we can come up with. We've got the stories, the legion is behind it, it would be a really fitting tribute to all who served to be able to add this to the cenotaph installation."
Gibb says the goal is to unveil the new cenotaph at this year's Remembrance Day ceremony.
