Windsor City Council will be looking at whether or not retailers should be allowed to stay open on statutory holidays.
In a report to council tonight, administration is recommending retailers be given the choice of whether or not to open on stat holidays — the only exception being December 25th.
Right now, shops must be closed for nine holidays unless they are given an exemption by the city under the Retailer Business Holidays Act.
Speaking on AM800's the Lynn Martin Show, ward 1 City Councillor Fred Francis says right now, the city controls which business are open and closed on holidays.
"If the administration recommendation is approved then the choice would be passed onto the retailers and really eliminate the need for an exemption," says Francis. "Right now the process is if you want to be open on a specific holiday that you are not suppose to be open on, you can put in for an exemption."
He says this may be an issue worth getting some public feedback.
"I think having a broader consultation process, having that dialogue with retailers and members of the public is a good thing before council makes a final decision."
Under the current rules, in order to get the exemption, there is a $200 fee.
