Jonathan Bernier stopped 39-of-41 shots as the Wings won for the fourth time in five games.
Evander Kane and Tomas Hertl got San Jose close in the final frame. Martin Jones made 20 saves for the Sharks, who lost their sixth straight.
The Red Wings finish their five-game road trip Thursday in Buffalo.
