Monday is the perfect day for fireworks, but wet weather turning into scorching temperatures could be on deck for the rest of the week.
That's according to Environment Canada's Geoff Coulson. The severe weather preparedness meteorologist spoke with AM800's Patty Handysides on The Afternoon News.
Coulson says rain is likely to descend on the region heading into Tuesday night.
"Looks to be one moving in from the mid-west and this will come in and create some showers, maybe even a few thunderstorms starting Tuesday night," he says. "That shower and thunderstorm activity are likely to linger in through Wednesday as well."
He says things will likely begin to heat up after the rain moves through.
"An area of high pressure is going to build to the south of Lake Erie and act like a big heat pump, bringing with it temperatures from the Gulf of Mexico," says Coulson. "It will be about 30C on Thursday, but then that humidity and those temperatures continue to build for Friday and into the long weekend."
Coulson says record setting temperatures are possible heading into the long weekend.
"Forecasted high on Friday of 33C, the current record is 33.9C and forecasting highs of 35C for both Saturday and Sunday," he says. "That would put us in record territory for both those days as well."
Coulson says the remainder of June heading into July is likely to remain hot and humid.
