A Quebec man is facing a human trafficking charge after an alleged assault at a Windsor hotel.
Police were called to the hotel Monday night for a report of a female being assaulted. While investigating they discovered an 18-year-old woman who had suffered visible injuries.
They were able to find the suspect and arrest him. Authorities say as it turns out the female had been entrapped into the sex trade and was being controlled by the male.
Windsor police Sgt. Steve Betteridge says once the officers started to talk to the woman, things changed:
"After speaking to the victim further, investigators revealed she was actually involved in being a victim of human trafficking," says Bettridge. "Human trafficking is a rare charge in the last 3-4 years we've had maybe 10 or 12 charges associated with that, it's not something we deal with a lot."
The victim had told police she met the suspect in June last year and became involved in a relationship that evolved into the sex trade.
Police say the man controlled aspects of her life including her sex trade work, finances and movements across Ontario and Quebec.
Yves Castor, a 27-year-old from Laval, Quebec, is charged with Human Trafficking, Material Benefit Resulting from Trafficking in Persons, two counts of Assault with a Weapon, and one count of Assault.
