A very unusual find for a staff member at the waste disposal centre in Windsor.
The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society received a call over the weekend from a staff member who found a snake.
Executive Director Melanie Coulter says the staff member knew enough about snakes to know it wasn't a fox snake or native snake.
The humane society sent someone out who identified the snake as a domestic python, about 4 to 5ft., long and likely abandoned.
"Many people are very fearful of snakes and that's why most of our calls about snakes are letting people know that these are native snakes and we have snakes in our environment and they are harmless unless you are a rat," she says.
Coulter says a reptile expert is examining the snake and determining if any assistance is needed.
After it is given a clean bill of health, a new home will be found.
Pythons are the world's longest and heaviest snakes and the longest reptiles. Some species can grow over 30 ft.
They are also nonvenomous constrictors and are not considered dangerous to humans.
