A trustee with the Greater Essex County District School Board wants to know the cost of installing air conditioning units in public schools in Windsor-Essex.
Jessica Sartori will be introducing a motion at Tuesday night's meeting for administration to come back with a heat mitigation strategy.
She says heat waves are coming as early as May and in some cases into September.
"I think it is getting hotter earlier, and the problem doesn't just end in June when the school year ends because the Greater Essex County District School Board does offer some really great summer programming," says Sartori.
As AM800 News told you last month, for the start of the school year, the humidex reached 43C or 108F.
Sartori says students need to be comfortable to learn.
"My concern is that you have to have an environment that is comfortable for people, you have to have an environment that is conducive to the teachers, they stand up there all day in the classroom and they are very energetic," she says.
There are 70 schools at the Greater Essex County District School Board but only 20% of them have air conditioning.
If the motion passes, Sartori would like a report from administration back by the end of the school year.
