A trustee with the Greater Essex County School Board believes it may be time for some help when it comes to paying the hydro bill.
Ron LeClair says the public school board has a tight budget and a break on hydro would allow funding to be spent on students rather than keeping the lights on.
LeClair says hydro rates are hurting everyone.
"As we're aware, electricity costs in the province of Ontario have skyrocketed for a number of reasons," says LeClair. "Obviously that's impacted both residents and commercial and I don't believe the school board is immune to those skyrocketing costs."
LeClair says the province sets the rates and has the ability to change them.
"Our sole source of funding is the Province of Ontario. So if we've been impacted to an extent that it's encroaching on some of our program funding I would then want to advocate for some increased funding or some transfers to offset some of those exorbitant increases," says LeClair.
Admnistration has been asked to produce a report on hydro costs for the school board over the last three years.
LeClair is hoping, with that information, trustees will agree to a motion calling on the Liberal government for a break on hydro costs.
