The Greater Essex County District School Board will be approaching Windsor City Council tonight regarding the fate of its new school.
The board has purchased the property at 1123 Mercer St. in Windsor to build a new Giles Campus French Immersion Public School, which is currently in the former WD Lowe High School property.
The property at 1123 Mercer is the former International Playing Card Company, which the city's Heritage Committee wants designated as heritage property.
Public Board Superintendent Cathy Lynd says the board will ask council for a demolition permit. "We wanted to be close to our current Giles campus public school and it is, I believe, within a kilometre of that location. So I think it is a great location for us and it is within the city sort of downtown area."
The board has purchased the property to build a new school to accommodate 645 students. It hopes to open the new school in time for the 2018-2019 school year.
The former owners of the property at 1123 Mercer St. had applied for a demolition permit but it was put on hold as the Heritage Committee wanted to designate it a heritage property.
