Design plans are in place to redevelop the former International Playing Card Company to a new french immersion public school.
The Greater Essex County District School Board purchased the property at 1123 Mercer St. with plans to tear down the building, but then the city designated it a heritage property. The designation means it can't be torn down.
As a result, the public school board's design kept heritage features of the building for the new Giles Campus school.
Public School Board trustee Alan Halberstadt says it will be up to the city's committee to approve the plans.
"Our administrative and planning people have been working for several months with the city's administration and a proposal is ready to go and it will be heard by the city's planning committee."
The new school will have a capacity of about 600 students.
"People who have been going to the old Lowe Secondary School, it has served its purpose but they are anxious to move onto a new building and hopefully it will be delivered to them," says Halberstadt.
The issues comes before the Planning, Heritage and Economic Development Standing Committee on November 14th.
