Schools in Forest Glade and Leamington are getting a look by the Greater Essex County School Board.
Trustees have voted to go ahead with two Program Accommodation Reviews.
In Forest Glade, the recommendation calls for a new school for Eastwood and Parkview students and new boundaries for Forest Glade Public to help balance students numbers.
The three schools are currently running at 67% capacity with 502 excess students spaces...with the changes capacity would be increased to 97%.
Irek Kusmierczyk is the city councillor for the ward and says he's looking forward to hearing from the public.
"Any time that you're talking about closing and consolidating schools in a neighbourhood we know that it has an impact. So over the next six months the school board will be inviting comment from the public just to basically gauge a sentiment from the residents and parents."
Kusmierczyk says it's early in the process.
"The media really has just brought this review to the attention of the public, but I do expect to be part of that conversation moving forward."
The review in Leamington includes five schools, Gore Hill, Margaret D. Bennie, Mill Street, Mount Carmel-Blytheswood and Queen Elizabeth.
The recommendation calls for a new school for Gore Hill and Margaret D. Bennie, the closure of Mill Street with its students going to Mount Carmel-Blytheswood and Queen Elizabeth and new boundaries for all schools to balance student numbers.
The schools have a combined 434 excess student spacesĀ and are running at 79% capacity...the changes would bring that to 97%.
Leamington Trustee, Dave Taves, says he's been fighting the PARC process for quite some time.
"I've seen it coming for a couple of years. I've been working really hard to try to get it not to happen. Last year, I started the recruitment and retention. I thought if we could get some of the kids that we lost to private schools back we'd fill the seats back up, but everything takes longer than I like. Everybody knows that, but I understand. I've been doing this long enough."
Taves says he's expecting big crowds when public meetings get underway.
"We'll have good representation on our committees I expect. It's a new process for us. We've never done it in this shortened timeline like the Ministry is recommending. I got started as a trustee because they wanted to close my kid's school. I think 2017 is soon for a lot of people to have any big changes, but that's always something that can be discussed as we go through."
The community will have to wait until the new year to give its input.
Public consultation for the Forest Glade schools goes February 8 and April 19.
Leamington meetings are planned for February 9 and April 20.
A final decision on both reviews is expected June 8.
