The provincial government is launching a survey looking for input on how to deal with legalized pot in Ontario.
The federal government is set to legalize cannabis on July 1st, 2018.
Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi told AM800's 'The Afternoon News' that the government wants feedback from Ontarians so it can get a better idea of how to regulate the drug.
Naqvi says there is a lot the province needs to sort out over the next year. "Distribution and retail is a provincial responsibility — where it should be sold, how it should be sold. Then, not to mention, road safety is very much a provincial responsibility, so there is a lot of work that provinces and territories have to do across the country."
"The province wants to get the balance right when it comes to regulating pot in Ontario," says Naqvi. "It's a very serious responsibility of course for us to develop a framework that really focuses on protecting our youth, preventing harm and making sure our roads remain the safest in North America."
"We want to make sure that it's not a free-for-all. We want to make sure that it's a balanced regulatory framework that really focuses on protecting our youth, that makes sure our roads remain safe and also focuses on public health by reducing harm," says Naqvi.
In addition to the survey, there will also be a series of forums targeting experts and stakeholders on the issue.
The online survey is available until July 31st.
