The MPP for Windsor West is lashing out at the Minister of Community and Social Services over hiring a consultant.
New Democrat Lisa Gretzky asked Todd Smith in the legislature why the government is spending one-million dollars to determine where to cut funding when it comes to services provided to those with disabilities.
Gretzky says the contract specifically instructs the consultant not to speak with people with disabilities, their families or advocates.
"We've learned that this Conservative government isn't listening to families but they are willing to pay up to $1-million for a consultant to tell them how to carry out these deep cuts to programs that support people with developmental disabilities," she says.
Minister Smith says the government is asking people about the services they need.
"I've actually sat at a table, with the member opposite in her own riding of Windsor West, meeting with families myself," said Smith. "Our ministry has taken to the streets we have taken to every community across the province. We will be continuing to meet with those who are involved in the sector."
Gretzky sees that meeting in Windsor differently.
"The minister did come to Windsor and he sat across the table from families and individuals with developmental disabilities as they cried and begged for help and yet he still chooses to spend a million dollars on a consultant to cut the services and supports they need," she says.
Among the programs targeted for cuts are respite care, day programs and in-home caregivers.
The tender for bids on that contract directed the contract winner not to consult with anyone outside the ministry.
