The principal and board president at St. Michael's College School have stepped down in the wake of allegations of sexual assault and assault by students.
Toronto police are investigating six incidents involving students at the all-boys private school — investigators announced six students face charges earlier this week. The school has been under the public scrutiny for not reporting allegations of sexual assault immediately when it learned of the incidents.
Principal Greg Reeves and Board President Father Jefferson Thompson announced they will be stepping down today so the school can move forward, and focus on, "change after the horrific events of student misbehaviour that came to light last week."
“Greg Reeves and Father Thompson have always put the welfare, education and formation of our students first – and they do so once again today. Having fulfilled their moral and ethical obligations to manage the immediate crisis and engage our school community, this courageous decision allows us to move forward with our goals: understanding how these events could have occurred, regaining the trust of our community and bringing cultural change to our school," says Michael Forsayeth, the Chair of the Board of Directors.
According to the release, the board has appointed Father Andrew Leung as interim president, and Vice Principals Emile John and David Lee will serve as acting co-principals.
