Lower gas prices over Christmas won't last into the weekend.
Prices have ranged between .92 and .96 cents/litre in Windsor-Essex over the past few days, but according to Dan McTeague of GasBuddy.com, that could change.
He told AM800's The Morning Drive, he's expecting a "restoration of retail margins."
"It's costing most gas stations about .90 cents today to buy their fuel," says McTeague. "It was likely to happen sooner or later but it will very quickly come right back down to the .91 range."
He says he doesn't expect much of a spike until the end of January.
"Oil prices really follow the fundamentals of supply and demand as does gasoline and there are two different markets. A lot of people think they're the same thing and oil has dropped so gas should drop as well — oil is an internationally traded product and gas is a little bit more local, so what happens at local refineries or the local/regional refineries has more to do with price."
According to McTeague, there are a lot of external factors driving the price of oil up and down.
"The most important that I can see is this ongoing trade tiff with the United States and China, there are other factors such as Brexit, there is of course an over supply of oil in the world today so that's created a real glut globally and that's why we're benefiting from these low prices."
This time last year, gas prices in this region were well over $1.00/litre.
