Caution tape is up at the old city hall building in downtown Windsor as prep work is underway to tear it down.
An "intrusive investigation" is currently underway in the old building to identify areas of concern with asbestos, lead and other hazardous materials.
A tender is expected to be issued in October or November with the clean-up of any hazardous materials beginning in January 2019 and lasting about two months.
Project Administrator Wadah Al-Yassiri says it is a complicated process, given the hazardous materials and nearby buildings.
"The proximity to the new city hall, 400 City Hall and the two heritage buildings of St. Alphonsus Anglican Church and All Saints, we have to be very careful and cognizant of the vibration," says Al-Yassiri.
After the building is cleared of any hazardous materials, Al-Yassiri says the actual teardown will run from March 2019 to July 2019.
The old city hall building was built in 1956 and it closed for business on May 17, 2018.
About $3-million have been set aside to demolition the old building.
