An exhibit at a small museum in Essex County is offering a unique look through history.
Maidstone Bicentennial Museum has a new exhibit of postcards collected from as far back as 1907 — Curator Victoria Beaulieu tells CTV News it shows the progression of how women are portrayed in cards into the '80s
Beaulieu tells CTV News the Greetings from the Past Collection takes visitors through postcards from soldiers to birthday and holiday greeting cards throughout the years.
"This is the type of thing that we like to get them to go through and get hands on ... they can touch it, they can get the idea of what the past was like," she says.
She goes on to say each card offers a snapshot of the society of the day, including some outdated stereotypes and language involving racialized people.
"The early Edwardian Times, women were in their place, during the '50s they were the good little housekeepers, then we start hitting the '70s there's a change and you can see it evolving," she says.
She says it took roughly two weeks to ready the collection for exhibition after being mostly donated to the museum by Windsor's Wayne Bristow.
