Work is underway to revitalize a vacant storefront on Sandwich St.
The Westside Foods Olde Towne Grocer has been empty for more than a year and if all goes to plan a Dollarama store will be operating out of the space by Christmas.
Fabio Costante is the city councillor for the ward and says, while this doesn't fully address the need for a grocery store in the neighbourhood, it will bring life back to a large property in Sandwich Town.
"Certainly you don't want to see vacant buildings especially on your main street," he says.
Given the heritage aspect of the building and area, Costante admits it is a bit of a balancing act.
"They are trying to, within I guess their framework, they have to keep a brand and they have got their own restrictions. They are trying to keep that going and conforming to the heritage conservation district rules."
Ward 4 Councillor Chris Holt put forth a motion requesting Dollarama reposition the door on the street, instead of facing the parking lot, as it currently sits.
Since the property is located in the Sandwich Heritage Conservation District, the plan is currently making its way through the various approvals needed to proceed.
The proposal will go before city council on June 3 for final approval
