A province-wide information gathering process into the 3 police oversight agencies makes a stop in Windsor tonight.
The Independent Police Oversight Review is making 18 stops in communities across Ontario to gauge whether those agencies Are doing what people expect.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) that's the main watchdog for police is the best known of the 3, but the review is also looking at the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) and the Ontario Civilian Police Commission. (OCPC)
There's a public session this evening in Vanier Hall at the University, starting at 6 PM.
Commission counsel Danielle Robitaille says they've also holding meetings through the day with various stakeholders: "mental health groups, patients and service providers, racialized community leaders the black community, religious minority communities the indigenous community and on and on. So we can provide the best recommendations possible to the government"
Robitaille says Justice Michael Tulloch, who is heading up the review, wanted a broad perspective and not just the Toronto-centric view, so they're holding sessions across Ontario.
She says this process is open to anyone who has an interest policing in the community and police oversight, who has thought about making a complaint against police and failed to do so, people who have gone through the process anyone who's had interaction with the SIU or just concerned members of the public.
Once the public consultation is complete, Justice Tulloch will write a repot of his findings and recommendations to be presented to the government.
