There's no shortage of opinion over a style of home called a 'snout house'.
It refers to a style of home has a garage that typically sticks out drastically from the front of a home.
Windsor police have voiced safety concerns because the garage can obstruct the front door from the street.
Windsor's Planning, Heritage and Economic Development Standing Committee debated for more than an hour over a report examining any future development of "snout houses."
The report recommends there be zoning restrictions to limit snout houses and that new developments in the annexed lands in Windsor "prohibit" snout houses.
Ward 4 Councillor Chris Holt doesn't completely agree with prohibiting "snout houses" but would like a firm policy. "Every time we go through one of these meetings, every single subdivision that comes forward, we discuss the safety aspect of the 'snout houses.' I'm really hoping for a quantifiable report that comes back because it's really unfair to developers when we address these things on an ad-hoc basis."
Ward 7 Councillor Irek Kusmierczyk believes people should have the choice to buy the home that suits them best. "Literally there are five or six different styles of homes. Some folks want a house that has a protruding garage, some folks don't want a protruding garage. Ultimately it's about choice and residents should have that choice of what they prefer."
Recommendations will be brought to a future city council meeting for further debate.
