A pickup hockey club that started in St. Clair Beach is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The Friday Knights Hockey Club is one of the oldest in the Windsor Essex area.

To mark the milestone, a celebration will take place May 4, 2019 at the Clubhouse Bar and Grill in Tecumseh.

Club President Paul Lachance says the fun starts at 7pm.

"It's like an open house, we're going to have snacks and draws and 50-50's. We're going to have some video, old video from the past and some new video to commemorate the 50th anniversary," he says. And of course, a bunch of old stories, a lot of stories from the past.  It's going to be a really good time."

The Knights originally played in the St. Clair Beach Arena back in 1969 but now play in the Tecumseh Arena.

One of the original founders, Ray Robinet, says they've toned things down from when the club first started.

"These guys now, piece of cake.  Nobody smokes anymore, they boys come home, it's good," says Robinet. "We're really happy to see all these traditions carried on, just been amazing.  really good."

Lachance says they have one special game each year.

"It's all the Montreal players against the rest of the league.  So about half are Montreal players and the rest are like either Detroit or Edmonton, you've got Boston and you wear your jersey for that night," he says. "We don't wear the Friday Knight jersey. The Montreal's all wear red and we all wear the other colours.  And it's intense."

Lachance says there are about 150 alumni of the club and they'd like to see all of them at the reunion on May 4.
