A PGA Canada tour is coming to Windsor for the next three years.
The MacKenzie Tour will tee off at Ambassador Golf Club in July.
On Monday, tour representatives asked the city to contribute $120,000 to partner and help bring the event to the city for the next three years.
In a recorded vote, council approved the request by a 7-4 margin.
Tour Vice President Scott Prichard says the support is great.
"We're excited." enthuses Prichard. "What this means is that we're coming to Windsor in 2018, we've been working really hard behind the scenes with a number of community leaders to make sure that we put our best foot forward"
He says the tour is a bit like the OHL is to the NHL.
"This is where some of the top up and coming players in the world of golf, professional golf, start out their career. It's kinda like your first job " he explains. "They come and play, we have 13 events nationwide, we start out in BC and work our way across the country. this event will be played in July, July 2-8 at Ambassador Golf Club"
Prichard says the weekend could bring as much as $4-million to the local economy.
"The mandate for this particular event is to spend as much money locally in terms of all the operating costs associated with the event" pledges Prichard. "Anything from tenting to signage, rebar, stakes, things like that, so all will be spent locally"
Prichard says they will also donate a minimum of $100,000 to Hospice of Windsor.
The funding breakdown is $50,000 for this year, $40,000 in 2019 and $30,000 in 2020.
Prichard says the organizing committee will also approach County Council for funding.
